Up early and had a cold breakfast of pop tarts to reduce my pack weight.  Left at 7:45 am and hiked briskly as it a beautiful cool day.

There is a great view of historic Bennington from the top of Harmon Hill.

The fun began, as the descent down to Rt. 9 was extremely difficult, the rise back up on the other side was tough as well.  Had lunch at the Melville Naugheim Shelter and decided to push onward for Goddard Shelter.  Hiked along a ridgeline for several hours. I was low on water and there were no sources for about 6 miles. It was getting late and I thought that I was almost to Goddard when I encountered steep rock stairs that seemed to go on forever.  I could hear voices off in the distance, so I knew that I was close.

Arrived at about 7:00 pm and had the most enjoyable drink of water in my life.  The Goddard Shelter is beautiful with a great view.  I decided to pitch my tent up the hill behind the shelter as quite a crowd had already laid claim to every inch of space in the shelter.  The crowd in and around the shelter included a Boy Scout troop, a summer camp group, Blue Jay, Grizzly an AT thru-hiker and his girlfriend Lisa and Glenn from Portland ME.

Hiked 14.4 miles today.
