Left the Stark’s Nest and hiked down to Appalachian Gap at a leisurely pace.  Got picked up fairly quickly and dropped off at the Shaws Supermarket in Waitsfield. While packing my food away in front of Shaws after shopping, I met a fellow northbound LT hiker named Dave from Virginia Beach.  Had lunch with Dave at the Waitsfield Inn and then went in search of the laundromat.   Washed my clothes and found a phone to make some calls.

Called Chris Wilkins to give him an update on my progress and he offered to pick me up and spend the evening in Burlington.  I read the paper and managed to get bitten by red ants while waiting for Chris.  We went to Chris’s house in Burlington and then out to dinner and watch the Red Sox game.  Great game which the Sox won and marked the comeback of Brett Saberhagen.  We also stopped by Chris’s office so I could check my team and send some e-mail.

Walked around Montreal for quite a while trying to find a laundromat, but nothing is open in Montreal on a Sunday morning.  We rode the subway from the hotel to the Olympic stadium and purchased tickets for the game.  Had a fantastic omelet before the game at a nearby restaurant called Moe’s.  Olympic Stadium, which was quite a dump, was open early and they let fans go onto the field.  The Red Sox won the game 8-5. Chris Stynes hit 2 home runs and the highlight was Rich Garces bunting into a double play.  Rode the subway back to the car and Bill & I left Bob in Montreal.

Bill dropped me off at a hotel in Burlington near the bus station.  I gave Bill some stuff to lessen my pack weight including my fleece, rain pants, and Whisperlite stove.  Found an open laundromat and cleaned my clothes.  Got some pizza and watched Andy Griffith on Nick at Night.

Woke up early to an aching knee.  Went to Bagel Works for breakfast and then got a buzz hair cut and bought a book about Thomas Jefferson called the American Sphinx.  Also went to Mountain Goat and bought an alcohol stove to replace my heavier MSR Whisperlite stove, a sipper for my water bag, and some lighter weight hiking socks.

Took the bus to Burlington and met Bill Keefe.  Went grocery shopping at the health food co-op and then supermarket.  Headed north to Montreal for overnight and the Red Sox game.  Called Bob Brown and then went to meet him at his hotel.  The hotel was on St. Catherine’s Street, but at the rough end.  We were going to crash with Bob, but his room was about as big as my tent.  Checked in and got our own “big” room.  Went to dinner with Bob and Bill at the Pasta Factory and limped around Montreal taking in the scenery.
