Didn’t sleep all that well on my first night on the trail as the hard floor of the shelter and my Therm-a-rest UltraLite are not quite the same as a feather bed.  There were three other hikers at the shelter last night including a couple from TN known a “Leading & Trailing” who are doing the northern half of the AT after doing the southern half last summer and a guy from Boston who is section hiking.

Started at 9:00 am, it is a beautiful day, sunny and not too hot.  The trail was fairly flat but very muddy today.  The mud was up to my ankles ½ the time.  I made it to Congdon Shelter about 3:45 pm and decided to stay for the night.  Congdon has bunks which will be better than sleeping on the floor like last night.  Spent the night with BJ the Bear from Minnesota and Blue Jay from Connecticut, both section hiking the AT.

Drop-off in North Adams, MA

Drop-off in North Adams, MA

Getting a late start at about 3:00 pm when Christine and Samantha dropped me off “by the side of the road” on Route 2 in North Adams, MA where the Blackinton Approach Trail crosses Rt. 2. Earlier in the day, we had lunch at Thai Gardens, a great Thai Restaurant in Williamstown.  The temperature had cooled down considerably as it had rained most of the morning on the ride out to western MA.

I missed the trail shortly after crossing over the Hoosic River footbridge in North Adams and had to turn around.  The initial hike on the Blackinton Trail was really uncomfortable as the mosquitoes were swarming.  It began to rain heavily about 6:00 pm which made the trail quite muddy.

Passed into Vermont and hiked in the rain and oncoming darkness until reaching the Seth Warner Shelter about 8:30 pm.  Navigated a stream down to the water source and ate sandwiches that I had brought from home at the picnic table in the rain.

Hiked 6.7 miles today.
